This is a nefarious society who combine supernatural and spiritual with scientific investigations. He is the only one who might have witnessed how Area X came about. It turns out the crawler is actually the mutated Lighthouse Keeper. "Where lies the strangling fruit that came from the hand of the sinner I shall bring forth the seeds of the dead to share with the worms that gather in the darkness and surround the world with the power of their lives while from the dim lit halls of other places forms that never were and never could be writhe for the impatience of the few who never saw what could have been." Here's some of the text of the sermon, in case you're interested: It's eerie as hell and we're not entirely sure what it means. Eventually, they discover that it's being written by a sort of biological mass they call The Crawler. In it, the women discover writing that appears along the walls in plant matter that's words of a sermon. In the books, in Area X, as well as the lighthouse, there's an equivalent structure that goes underground, that is always referred to as a tower (but is more like a tunnel or a well).

One of the biggest things the movie dropped from the books was the Lighthouse Keeper and The Tower. In Authority, a clone of The Psychologist appears from out of Area X causing it to expand even further, so JJL could be back in the present day as well as flashbacks if the filmmakers so decided. She's dying of cancer (as in the film) and she has move information about the phenomenon than anyone else. It turns out Ventress was actually the Director of the Agency prior to John (see above) and it was she who managed and planned the 12th Expedition (detailed in Annihilation). It turns out she lived in the area now called 'X' when she was young, and had ventured inside Area X before the 12th expedition without telling the Agency, visiting her childhood home which is still there, and the lighthouse, and returning to the Agency. A photo found in the lighthouse (not in the film but there are easy ways around this) turns out to be a picture of her as a little girl with the lighthouse keeper. In the next two books, we learn that Ventress is more entwined in Area X than we realised. However that doesn't mean she can't come back in some capacity, as she's a big part of the trilogy. Jennifer Jason Leigh's character, known as The Psychologist in the book, is dead by the end of Annihilation the movie – that's true of the book too. All of which could work in a second film. She escapes, and John guesses correctly where to find her. The Agency suspects he's getting too close to her so it moves her to another facility.

He breaks out of this cycle and begins to empathise and build a relationship with her. John learns that he's being hypnotised by 'The Voice' – a big theme from the first book that doesn't manifest in the film – affecting his handling of Lena.

The Agency is full of bureaucracy and Control is constantly undermined by his assistant director Grace Stevenson. He's looking into the files and reports from all the previous expeditions (of which we learn there have been many, and far more than the Agency is admitting). This does seem to rather rule out further explorations of this landscape, but with the movie's ending implying Oscar Isaac's Kane and possibly Lena are Area X clones and not the original version of themselves, the themes of genetic mutation and refraction could be pursued.Ĭontrol has a handler known only as 'The Voice' who gives him instructions over the phone. This absolutely does not happen in the book. At the end of the film, Lena destroys it with fire. This is the name of the strange landscape beyond the shimmer where the 12th expedition of Lena (Natalie Portman), Ventress (Jennifer Jason Leigh), Anya Thorensen (Gina Rodriguez), Josie Radek (Tessa Thompson) and Cass Sheppard (Tuva Novotny) head.Īrea X (referred to as a 'Pristine wilderness' in the book) is a biological anomaly which appeared suddenly and is rapidly expanding. Since Annihilation makes some major changes from the book (and brings in some elements from the sequels), and since the timeline of Authority and Acceptance isn't linear ( Authority takes place straight after Annihilation but Acceptance includes scenes that happen before Annihilation), we're going to break down possible sequel ideas by theme rather than separating them between the books.
